Typography

It is often argued that fonts "are the clothes that words wear" meaning that all fonts used are as relection on the style and connation of my magazine. It is therefore important to choose a font which is approriate for my magazine. I want to use a varaition of font to break up information,
these are the varation of texts I have tried and tested so far I have decided that the first text called BASE 04 will be used to emphasize important aspects of the magazine such as the main interview article etc I have also chosen to use the fourth font called "indy pimp" I like this font because it is very tall and thin and reminds me of the typeface used in spin. It is easy to read by has a unique clean design element to it.

Front cover photo decsion

I now have a variety of pictures which I could use for the front cover. I have to make the vital desicion in which photo to use. Before I do this, I think it is important firstly to experiment with the logo and layout to see which picture works most effectively as a package and also in order to choose the most enticing attractive look.

I think this is a really effective picture and it is very attention grabbing and despite the logo and picture not complimenting each other, I still think they work well together. However there is not a lot of space in this picture and it would be hard to fit text around the picture without having to sacrifice part of the picture. There are also a variety of colours in the picture with would limit which colours I could use around the image.

More photos

Due to the quality of my previous photographs I have gone away and taken some more to try and improve and enhance some of the concepts I used in my previous photoshoot. These are a few of my favourite, all of which have been edited slightly using a website called http://www.picnik.com/

Photos

Here are the screen shots from my photographs I took for my front cover image and double page spread.

For the front cover of my magazine I will be using my friend Charlotte Bailey as my model, I will style her hair make up and clothes myself and aim to produce a powerful picture for the front cover of my magazine in order to make it eye catching and enticing. The image must also fit in with the look of the type of music I am going for, the character I have created for Charlotte follows her style already which is quite "indie" and casual but I also want it to have a fun rock chick element to it as my magazine is aimed at young women who listen to alternative, rock and indie music. These women will be aspirers and succeders meaning that Charlotte will act as an icon to them but will also be a representative of this audience. Although I want these images to be powerful I still want them to have a feminine feel to them.
This is a variety of my photos that I took for the front cover of my magazine. I tried lots of different looks and settings in order to find the perfect picture. I wanted an image which was powerful and simple, that would appeal to my target market. I also wanted the photos to have a youthful fun element to them. Here are the few favourite images for differnt reasons that I will now have to choose between.

This photograph was taken at a photography studio at North West Kent College and I feel the lighting is very bright and the photo is of a good quality. However Ido not feel as if this image has the "X factor" and does not have much impact making it inappropriate for the front cover for a music magazine.

I really like this picture and think it has a very good impact. It is simple and not overstated but still draws attention and has and egdgy "rock chick" feel to it. The only thing that worries me about this image is I feel that it is slightly out of focus and am therefore not sure if i will be able to use it. But it definately has potentional and if need be, I may re-take it again and try to get a sharper picture.

I also really love this photograph it is fun and youthful and is not as restrictive as the other image as I feel more things can be edited and changed to enhance the picture. I love the lighting on this picture and think it definately has potential for the front cover. However once again I feel this photography may be too out of focus to use on the front page.

This is another image I am particularly fond of and I feel it fits my brief really well. It is quite conceptual and eccentric and is powerful and strong while still being feminine. It has a very youthful fun element to it and the gaze is particularly engaging. This is prehaps my favourite image to use for the front cover at this stage.

This is very similar from the previous image, however I feel this pose is slight more effective and the expression on her face is much more engaging.

Planning- Poses/clothing make-up

Something that is fundamental to decide before I take pictures is to research poses, costume background etc. This will ensure my photoshoot is organsised and I have a clear idea of what I want so I can direct my model clearly to get the best results.
I will not be sticking to one idea and I will be experimenting with a range of techniques in order to produce a powerful, strong image. However there are some definate influences in my ideas.

Agyness Deyn
Although Agyness Deyn is a fashion model she has a distinctive, powerful look which I have been inspired by.

Agness Deyn has a slight masculine edgy look to her. She has a very rock chick edgy image and photos of her are often simple yet have high impact. I love the way she uses her hands expressivly in a lot of her poses and have taken inspiration from many of them.
Her make up is also fairly simple and not too over stated; her face is fresh looking and her dark eyes are the feature which predominantly stand out. Her clothing is often bold but simple, not too fussy or it would draw away from her face.

Marina Diamandis
Marina & the Diamonds, is the recording name of Welsh-born London-based singer-songwriter Marina Diamandis who is fairly new to the music scene. This is a character I particularly identify with for my magazine as I feel she appeals to the market that my magazine is aimed at. The genre of her music is alternative, indie, new wave, pop and this is clear and reflected in her image.

One of the main things I like about Marina is her conceputual, unquie photos which reflect her style and music. She is stylish and feminine and appeals to women as she is not a sexual figure. I love the red lipstick and nails with pale skin and backgrounds and also the bright spotlight lighting often used in her photos.
